      <image:title>2021-2024 paintings - Roots</image:title>
<image:caption>Ink, paper and oil paint on canvas 57 x 22 inches, 2024 Original was sold limited 20 edition prints are available. This painting was inspired by a Japanese tree pruning method called the Daisugi technique. By pruning the tree, it trains the tree to grow strong solid smaller trees above the mother tree and allows wood to be harvested without killing the mother. This sustainable practice inspired me to draw the tree, as well as my concern for the environmental crisis and the future of our planet. The tree is growing out of the ears as a way to imagine what living in harmony with nature could look like, as well as how trees will take back the earth after we are gone. The figures are comfortably entwined together, safe under the tree and with each other. Yet, an unsettling pink sky loams above them as an omen of where our planet could be heading if we do not find ways of sustainability. The scroll like shape of the painting is a nod to ancient texts and knowledge such as the daisugi method, which could hold the keys for a more environmentally responsible future.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Work on paper - Dyeing forest</image:title>
<image:caption>This is a watercolor and ink painting on paper 5.5 x 9 inches, 2022. I created this piece during an art residency at Sachaqa Centro del Arte in San Roque, Peru. This gorgeous place was a 20 minute walk uphill from the center of the town, nestled inside the jungle. The town was build around a river where the locals gathered everyday to cool down and swim. The residency director taught me how to find mineral rich stones in the river and grind them down to create pigments, which I used for the sienna tones of this painting. This painting was an experimentation with the earth pigments as well as a reflection of my time there. The jungle had lethal spiders, dengue fever, parasites and millions of less disturbing creatures. However it was inspiring and beautiful to be immersed in nature and to see how the locals lived sustainably. The gardens were full of coca, fruit trees and herbs that were fertilized by composting. The people of the town harvested cocoa beans and nuts then sat in the streets to dry them. They were peaceful and connected to each other, a stark difference from my life back in NYC. This painting started as a sketch of a few of the trees in front of the studio space. The figure walking into or out of the portal was a reflection of the local beliefs in spirits of the mountains, trees and forest. I liked the idea of a supernatural portal in the forest, with an otherworldly spirit either entering or leaving.</image:caption>

This gorgeous place was a 20 minute walk uphill from the center of the town, nestled inside the jungle. The town was build around a river where the locals gathered everyday to cool down and swim. The residency director taught me how to find mineral rich stones in the river and grind them down to create pigments, which I used for the sienna tones of this painting along with gouache for the blues. I created this painting after recovering from a stomach bug and still feeling lethargic, yet curious and inspired by what would happen next.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Short Version: My work explores vulnerability and the connection between the body and nature through surreal figurative oil paintings. Inspired by the COVID-19 pandemic, I began creating psychological portraits that reflect the interconnectedness of humanity and the environment. Initially, I drew wood grain patterns in my backyard, symbolizing our dependence on nature and the striking visual similarities between organic patterns and the human body. This led to incorporating these patterns into my figurative work. I often use myself as a model, with the selfie mode on my phone offering control and introspection in my process. Painting women in nature is central to my practice, where their nude forms symbolize liberation, safety, and a departure from gender norms. Nature serves as a shelter for these women, representing the intertwined destruction of the planet and ourselves. My work is an expression of the sensitivity of the human condition, and an exploration of our connection to the natural world, while offering a space for healing and introspection.</image:caption>
